Who Invented the Notebook?

The Story Behind the Stationery We Can’t Live Without

Notebooks are not merely pages glued inside a cover they're loyal friends to your plans, reminders, and ideas. But have you ever thought about who thought of the notebook first?

At Paper Passion, we commemorate not only the beauty of high-end paper but also the rich heritage that created it. Let's turn the leaves of time and read the tale of the iconic notebook  from ancient tools to the stationery staple it is now.

From Scrolls to Pages: A Shift in Thinking

In earlier civilizations such as Egypt, Greece, and China, writing took place on scrolls, tablets, or parchment. Functional as these were, they weren't the most convenient to carry or keep in order.

Sometime during the 2nd century AD, Romans invented the codex - a precursor to the book that enabled individuals to write on folded paper held together with a binding. The evolution began towards a more practical means of recording thoughts.

The Handmade Notebook Era: 14th–15th Century

By the 14th and 15th centuries, Europeans started making notebooks manually. People made "gatherings" - empty pages sewn or stitched together – and drew horizontal lines by hand to serve as a guide for writing. Notebooks were personal, utilitarian, and extraordinarily precious.

Actually, kids learned how to create and maintain notebooks in school. It was part of learning and information handling. Notebooks were not used solely for writing; they were used to structure knowledge in an era where printing was still in its infancy.

Thomas W. Holley: The Man Behind the Legal Pad

Flash forward to 1888: Massachusetts paper mill laborer Thomas W. Holley used residual paper trimmings from the mill and stitched them into pads. He had created a practical, affordable writing pad  today's legal pad.

Holley's innovation made writing more convenient and efficient, affecting notebooks and office supplies for decades to come.

The Notebook Today: A Creative Companion

Notebooks today are in all shapes, sizes, and forms but the essence of the concept is still the same: to provide individuals with a platform to think, plan, and create unfettered.
